Prof. Dr. Christian Tietje, LL.M. (Michigan)
Dr Christian Tietje is Professor of European Law and International Business Law, Managing Director of the Institute for Business Law and Head of the Research Centre for Transnational Business Law at the Faculty of Law at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. He was Dean of the Faculty of Law and Economics from 2010 to 2014 and Rector of Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg from 2018 to 2022.
His research focuses on the EU's common trade policy and international commercial law (world trade law, international investment law, global financial markets).
Christian Tietje studied at the Universities of Kiel, Paris V and the University of Michigan Law School. He passed two state examinations with honours (1993/1998) and received a Master of Laws with distinction in 1995. He was awarded a doctorate in 1997. In the winter semester of 2000/2001, he was habilitated at the Faculty of Law of the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel. He has been a professor since 2001.
Christian Tietje has published numerous books and over 100 articles focussing on common commercial policy and international economic law. He has also advised states, international organisations, non-governmental organisations, business associations and multilateral companies in these areas. He has been called as an expert in several arbitration proceedings and heads a working group of the Investment Law Committee of the German Association for International Law (ILA), which deals with the relationship between international investment law and public international law. He is also a member of the ‘ILA Study Group on the Role of Soft Law Instruments in International Investment Law’.
