Climate change threatens human rights and requires effective measures to combat it. However, these measures cannot be financed solely by public funds, but require large sums of private capital. Against this backdrop, Jun.-Prof. Dr. Julian Scheu and Eva-Maria Wettstein argue that states have a human rights obligation to close the so-called "climate investment gap" and analyse three practical examples. The article "Climate Change, Human Rights, and Private Capital: The Obligation of States to Close the Climate Investment Gap" has recently been published in the Austrian Review of International and European Law.

14th Conference of the Krickenbeck Circle

On June 21 to 22, 2024, the members of the Krickenbeck Circle met for the 14th time at Schloss Montabaur to discuss recent developments in international investment law. The conference was again organized by the the International Investment Law Centre Cologne and the University of Siegen. The conference report will be published later this year.

Online workshop on the protection of investments in renewable energies under the Energy Charter Treaty

On February 6, 2024, the online workshop on the protection of investments in renewable energies under the Energy Charter Treaty took place in collaboration with the law firm Herbert Smith Freehills. Following the brief presentations by former doctoral candidates on this topic, the developments were commented upon by the lawyers Patricia Nacimiento (HSF) and Robert Hunter (Osborne Clarke). We look forward to organizing future workshops with HSF and thereby contributing to the networking of legal professionals and academia!

Conference Report Krickenbecker Kreis 2023

In June 2023, the 13. conference of the Krickenbecker Kreis on international investment law took place. The speakers discussed, among other things, the role of investment law in the context of the Russian aggression, the interaction between investment law and climate change, and the correlation between investment law and EU law. The conference report has recently been published in the German Arbitration Journal (SchiedsVZ 2024, 50).
